Resilience grows hand-in-hand with co-empowerment.
Design Thinking can get us there. Together.

Resilience is our individual and collective ability to address slow and sudden threats and efficacy is engaging with others to shape the systems we inhabit.

A resilient community prepares for sudden shocks and addresses long-term stresses like inequity, poverty, health challenges, and food security.  Its systems are healthy and working well together, and foster co-empowerment.  Decision-making is transparent, intersectional, and convergent (bridging research into practice across sectors).  There is a sense of unity and purpose.   Read more about resilience here

It is good to have a utopian vision guiding us on a path to resilience, but, frankly, most people are already tired of the concept, and in too much pain, grief and fear, feeling too alone and powerless to meet "resilience" with anything but frustration and defeat.

We can help students and communities heal, learn and thrive by engaging youth in work that matters, and creating education frameworks that foster creative, collaborative and compassionate problem-solving, systems thinking and efficacy, or the confidence of our power to make a difference for ourselves and others.

"During and after the storm, all I could do was draw.  I just drew and drew.  Design Lab gave me my voice back.  Now I know I have ideas that can help people."                                                                                                                       --Paola, Escuela FMC

Design Thinking is a  problem-solving process that begins with empathy-seeking, surfaces the real problems and solves them collaboratively. It teaches 21st century skills and the mindsets to thrive with agility in a world we do not yet know.

Students, teachers and their community partners impact the world around them in ways that matter.  With one of the most vulnerable communities in Puerto Rico, design lab students innovated faster ways to evacuate, developed a system for mental health care, and helped create more flood-proof houses.

Together we can use design thinking to implement change and build efficacy and resilience in your school, university, business, or community.
